+ The story
Stacey had never been to Baton Rouge before and her long fingers were sweaty as they slipped into the holes of the black and blue bowling ball between her hands. She’d bit her nails down to nothing the night before, lying awake in her motel room. Listening to the sounds of the ice machine outside her window and pulling at the loose string on one of the flowers on the bedspread. She tried to watch TV but the only channel she could get was some infomercial trying to sell her a matching set of bathrobes and it made her the loneliest she ever felt in her entire life.
She spent too long doing her makeup and was in such a hurry to run over to the tournament that she didn’t even realize she left her keys dangling in the door to the motel. Standing on the glossy hardwood she looked down at her cheap bowling shoes and felt so stupid she could cry. She didn’t belong here. The other women’s shirts were pressed and clean and she’d let the wrinkles out of hers with the steam from the shower. She looked out at the crowd and saw her mom sitting there with her alligator purse on her lap. She’d driven all the way from Montgomery just to watch her bowl.
Stacey took a breath, and walked forward, each step in her windup bringing her closer to the line. She felt the ball leave her hands and could hear the air come out of the room. First the hollow sound of crashing and then the roar of the crowd.
