This vintage amber glass ashtray comes from the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas.
The Silver Slipper Gambling Hall opened on the Las Vegas Strip in 1950, built by Bill Moore, who had also opened the Last Frontier next door. It was a Western-themed casino and saloon, and its famous rooftop sign, a giant glowing slipper that rotated over the Strip, became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. Located across from the Frontier, it drew a steady crowd with its saloon atmosphere, gaming tables, and the Golden Horseshoe Revue, a long-running showgirl show.
In 1961, Howard Hughes acquired the Silver Slipper, reportedly after becoming fixated on the slipper sign, which could be seen from his penthouse at the Desert Inn. He kept the casino operating, and the slipper stayed lit above the Strip for decades. The Silver Slipper closed in 1988 and was demolished in 1988 to make way for the Frontier’s expansion, but the sign was saved and later restored for display in the Neon Museum’s collection in downtown Las Vegas.
