This set includes a Saratoga Racetrack promotional keychain from New Year’s Eve 1979 and a vintage domino from our collection.
+ The story
It’s New Year’s Eve and the snow is starting to settle on the stands. There’s hardly anyone else here. Just one man slumped against the rail, and another warming his hands with his breath. Jimmy has a ticket on a horse named Dutch Boy that pays forty-three to one. He’ll be forty-three in the morning. He had worked that out in line at the window.
He holds the ticket flat against his chest, under his coat to shelter it from the snow and watches the men lead the horses into the gate. The bell rings and the horses break free. For awhile, it’s not looking too good. But then at the far turn, something happens. His luck turns around. He’s the only one yelling. There’s hardly anyone else there to see this miracle. Dutch Boy takes the turn wide and keeps going. He’s already halfway down the bleacher stairs, taking them two at a time, winning ticket in hand, his steps ringing out across the bare metal. He’s smiling, his eyes are wet from the wind. He can’t believe his luck, right up until the moment he feels the paper pull apart in his hands, sees the numbers run together. Before he pats his jacket for his car keys, and realizes somewhere along the way, he lost his way home.
