+ Story
Lorraine left these behind on the plastic seats of the Wakefield Bowladrome after one too many pitchers of Miller Lite. Her team “Piece of Cake” have won their amateur bowling league four years running. She owns a bakery in Cambridge, but makes the drive in the Astrovan she uses for deliveries every Tuesday to bowl with a group of girls she met in a sewing class through the YMCA. They’d all been a bit quiet at first, sticking their tongues through their teeth as they slowly pushed the fabric through the machine as straight as they could. But after a few weeks they’d started to get more comfortable and pretty soon they were teasing each other about how crooked their lines were and laughing at the way the instructor sneezed. They must have pricked their thumbs a thousand times. Sometimes it was so bad they had to suck the blood to keep it from running down their fingers and ruining the silk. But by the end, they’d each made something that sort of resembled a dress and a few friends willing to drink warm beer on a weeknight.
