Stateline is where Nevada’s casino strip meets the mountains. Right where US-50 crosses from California into Nevada, a few blocks of casino hotels form a mini Las Vegas with four 20-story towers over the lakeshore. The High Sierra had a Vegas pedigree of its own. In the 1980s, the former Sahara Tahoe was known as Del Webb’s High Sierra, and Del Webb’s name was already on the Strip, since the Sahara in Las Vegas was sold to Del Webb in 1961.
The building kept changing its look. It was later the Horizon, the Hard Rock Casino, and the Golden Nugget, which means a High Sierra chip belongs to one chapter in a long run of names on the same Tahoe corner. The casino signs are different now, but the mountains are the same, and this chip is still here.
