Hawthorne sits in the middle of a very long drive, and the El Capitan made itself the stop worth making. A vintage postcard from roughly 1930 to 1945 shows it pitching itself as “the bright spot between Las Vegas and Reno,” complete with a hit-the-jackpot slogan. The hall was a local fixture for decades. A photograph of its bar dates to the 1940s, and a menu from 1955 to 1965 calls it the El Capitan Restaurant Gambling Saloon.
The look is pure old Nevada. Pink and blue neon sits above its circle bar, in the style of an old Vegas gambling joint, and the whole place sits in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada. The neon has a few more miles on it now, and so does this chip.
